Elevated design and thoughtful placemaking in mixed-use real estate development produce tangible community impacts and premium financial returns. A new report issued earlier this year by the nonprofit advocacy group Smart Growth America—a report conducted in 2020 and 2021, when the Covid-19 pandemic was compelling people to flee cities and commercial office space—reveals significant price premiums sustained across the board for walkable urban real estate in America’s largest metropolitan areas, including 34% price per-square-foot premiums in for-sale residential and 47% premiums in office and multifamily rentals.
