Risk Management in Construction

07 February 2020

Risk management in construction projects is a necessary process to ensure the safety of every worker on your site. It involves the assessment of risk factors and the development of practices to control the assessed risks.

A comprehensive risk management plan can prevent accidents and keep your project on time and within budget. Here we’ll discuss just how vital a proper plan is and the crucial components of risk management in construction.

Importance of Risk Management in Construction Projects

Risk management is essential in the effort to decrease financial, legal, and environmental risks. But overall, it most importantly reduces the risk of injury on a site.

Risk management is the process of identifying, controlling, and mitigating risks on a constructionsite and throughout the entire scope of the project. Risk management helps a team develop a plan to address the most common risk scenarios and prevent them from becoming a problem.

Risk Assessment

Risk management starts with a thorough risk assessment. Within risk assessment, a team will identify hazards throughout a project, including:

  • Worker injury
  • Over budget/delayed project
  • Public injury
  • Property damage
  • Etc.

After creating a list of the possible hazards, the team will calculate the probability of said hazards. To conclude the risk assessment, a team will compile a comprehensive list of all dangers along with their probability.

Risk Response & Mitigation Plan

The next step in risk management consists of developing a risk response and mitigation plan. Within this phase, the team will develop a response plan for specific risks discovered in the risk assessment.

The plan will consist of ways to avoid certain risk factors, tranSFerring risk, mitigating issues, and then accepting others.

Start by presenting options to avoid specific risks entirely. Then move onto ways your team can tranSFer some risks through-insurance and other third-party options. Next, assess how to mitigate risks by removing complexities and promoting communication within your departments.

Unfortunately, some risks are unavoidable, so be sure to prepare as much as possible for these specified risks to minimize damage.

Execution & Risk Monitoring

As a project goes on, risk monitoring will help decrease risks that come along the way. All aspects of the project must be closely monitored to evaluate small issues that can cause big damage.

This also involves proper communication. A risk management plan must be thoughtfully executed and communicated to the entire team in order to operate as it’s supposed to.

These are all the components of well-rounded risk management in construction projects. Focus emphasizes safety in every aspect of our projects, and that includes conducting comprehensive risk management best practices.
